On 5 June 2025, Samajik Seva Sadan (SSS) marked World Environment Day with a community-focused programme at Kansbahal village in Bargaon Block, Sundargarh. The event brought together community members, farmers, local leaders and agriculture experts to promote environmental protection and climate-resilient livelihoods.
The programme was honoured by Hon’ble Deputy Speaker Shri Bhabani Shankar Bhoi as Chief Guest, along with agriculture officials, representatives from Krishi Vigyan Kendra, local elected representatives and community leaders. The SSS team, led by Founder and Secretary Ms. Veronica Dung Dung, welcomed the dignitaries through traditional rituals, cultural dances and songs, reflecting the community’s rich cultural heritage.
In his address, Shri Bhabani Shankar Bhoi encouraged people to adopt environmentally responsible practices, highlighting the message of “Planting a Tree in the Name of One’s Mother.” He also emphasized the importance of reducing plastic use and promoting climate-resilient agriculture, including millet cultivation under the Shree Anna Abhiyaan.
Agriculture officials highlighted the growing impacts of climate change and stressed the importance of afforestation, groundwater recharge and sustainable natural resource management. The event also drew attention to traditional crops and foods, including Dhenki Kuta rice, as an opportunity to strengthen rural livelihoods while preserving local food systems.
A major highlight was the community tree plantation drive, where dignitaries planted saplings along the roadside. Building on its earlier work supporting nearly 400 families with fruit-bearing saplings, SSS announced plans for a community-driven social forestry initiative focused on medicinal plants and collective responsibility for their protection.
The celebration served as a powerful reminder that environmental protection begins with collective action. By bringing together traditional knowledge, community participation and sustainable practices, SSS continues to support communities in building a greener, healthier and more climate-resilient future.
